Clinical supervision is not only needed in the early stages of a career, but is often beneficial if used throughout a career. It is important to understand that clinical supervision is a healthy aspect of clinical work and not an indication of lack of knowledge. No matter how good an addiction professional you are, it is important to consult and connect with other professionals about cases.
For this Discussion, read this week's resources and explore benefits of clinical supervision in addiction treatment and consider how supervision might change over a counselor's career.

RE: Week 9 Discussion 2
Substance use disorders are becoming increasingly complex as drug use patterns change and cooccurring mental disorders are seen more frequently. Complex treatment issues call for more sophisticated clinicians. That is why it is imperative that addiction professionals receive clinical supervision although it is bound to change through the professional’s career.
Benefits of receiving clinical supervision as an addiction professional.
Clinical supervision is an essential part of being an addiction professional, and it is a process that occurs over time. In substance abuse treatment, clinical supervision is the primary means of determining the quality of care provided. It enhances client care quality, improves counselors' efficiency in direct and indirect services, increases workforce satisfaction, professionalization, and retention. Counselors use supervision to ensure quality improvement and implement evidence-based practices (CSAT, 2007) In addition, counselors use supervision to build professional support, social support, decrease burnout, learn methods, techniques, skills, and other effective ways to work with clients. Counselors also used it to develop self-awareness (Laschober et al., 2013).
How that supervision might change over the addiction professional's career.
Clinical supervision is imperative to counselors as it serves as the foundation for professional growth, competence, and self-efficacy (Schmidt, 2012). However, the level of complexity in the profession also challenges addiction counselors and clinical supervisors to maintain strong counseling skills and receive support and mentoring to ensure that they are providing the most effective services for their clients (Laschober et al, 2013). With an effective supervisor, clinical supervisors help counselors identify issues and solutions to various complex problems. Once the clinician learns how to handle or resolve the problem, they become expert in that area of practice. Therefore, the counselor can use this knowledge to promote change in others. Since supervisors are in a position to serve as catalysts for change, they need to develop proficiency in addressing the needs of diverse clients and personnel
In addition, the risk of ongoing turnover in the profession is also an issue clinical supervisors should not ignore. It would be beneficial for clinical addiction supervisors to develop a system of receiving feedback from the addiction counselors they work with to maintain awareness of the importance of their role and to help identify training needs (Willis, 2010). On the contrary, many substance abuse counselors come into the field with an intense sense of calling and the desire to be of service to others, with a strong pull to use their gifts and make themselves instruments of service and healing. But due to stress, burnout, compassion fatigue over some time, some counselors withdraw, or get out of the field entirely; most complain or suffer in silence. To combat this issue, the supervisor will need to educate counselors on the importance of self-care, help them rediscover what gives them joy, meaning, and hope. Utilizing appropriate self-reflection will help redevelop their innate capacity for compassion (SAMSA, 2014)
